The PlayStation 4 has been announced somewhat recently, and the console’s overall hardware specifications have been revealed (to a certain extent).

Sony PS 4 Specs

Sony’s next gen console will pack an AMD Jaguar processor featuring 8 cores, a 64-bit x86 architecture and 2MB L2 cache for each quad-core group. Additionally, the PlayStation 4 will feature 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM and an AMD Radeon-based next-generation graphics card, boasting 1.84 TFLOPS.

During the Game Developers Conference it was also revealed that the console’s developer tools will run on Windows 7 64-bit. Additionally, various other PlayStation 4-specific tools such as the PlayStation Shader Language have been integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 and 2012. Supposedly, the Shader Language offers functionality that is either up to par or even better than OpenGL 4.0 and DirectX 11. Tessellation support is also included.

Another interesting aspect about this new device is that it comes along with a new camera tagged as “PlayStation 4 Eye” that employs two high sensitivity cameras operational with wide angle lenses that can cover the reflection of a gamer from the backdrop or discriminate between gamers in the locale, enhancing the gamers’ fun time. Also, the device is expected to have equipped with a facial and voice recognition technology in order to allow the gamers to play the games in a more intuitive manner.

Furthermore the PS4 device is offered with an inherent hard disk drive. The box set is expected to have a 6X Blu Ray drive, USB3 port with other supplementary ports and 8X DVD integrated with it…. OK, what else?

Supercharged Computer Architecture

Speaking to technology magazine, Gamasutra, Sony’s PlayStation 4 lead architect Mark Cerny has gone into a little more depth about the choices that were made in designing the system’s innards, which they are calling “supercharged PC architecture”.

A typical PC GPU has two buses. There’s a bus the GPU uses to access VRAM, and there is a second bus that goes over the PCI Express that the GPU uses to access system memory. But whichever bus is used, the internal caches of the GPU become a significant barrier to CPU/GPU communication – any time the GPU wants to read information the CPU wrote, or the GPU wants to write information so that the CPU can see it, time-consuming flushes of the GPU internal caches are required.

Well, it’s all a little technical and complicated – but Cerny and Sony’s other hardware engineers have spent long hours trying to come up with a system that isn’t held back by the sort of bottlenecks you get on PCs.

Then PS4 gaming console so far is definite to have 10 games and those in the confirmed list are: Drive Club, Watch dogs, Deep Down, Destiny, Killzone: Shadow Fall, The Witness, Knack, Infamous: Second Son, Diablo 3, Final Fantasy. The PS 4 is expected to have a backward compatibility support for the legendary games, however it seems one has to pay for it again in order to have it function in the new device.

Release Date and Competition

Without a doubt, the PlayStation 4 is one of this year’s most anticipated gaming-related releases. As a result, every enthusiast out there is wondering when exactly the PS4 will be available for purchase. Rumors have suggested an October release, but there’s no official confirmation regarding the matter.

It should also be mentioned that Sony isn’t the only company to prepare a next-gen console for later this year. Microsoft is expected to reveal the Xbox 720 in the following months as well. Needless to say, the competition will be fierce. Really can’t wait to see what they bring out next.

The Sony PS4 could be seeing a release in October, a source who spoke to the folks at PCGamer suggested that the console could be revealed during a special event held in May prior to E3. During Sony’s PlayStation announcement back in February, while the console itself was officially announced and had its controller revealed, one of the main things missing was the actual console itself.

Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has said Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 4, which features a mix of off-the-shelf computer components, is like being given “the world’s best PC.”

Much has been made of the potential performance of Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 4 console: while its high-throughput – but relatively high-latency – 8GB of GDDR5 memory, shared between the system and the graphics processor, is certainly impressive, its use of AMD’s accelerated processing unit (APU) technology for both central and graphics processing has others concerned.

While we’re sure that some gamers aren’t too fussed about what the console actually looks like, we’re sure that many are curious anyway. A video offering a side-by-side comparison of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 running on a PC (running on an Intel Core i7 processor with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 graphics card ) and on a PlayStation 4 has been released, offering gamers the first glimpse at what some in the industry claim will be putting gaming PCs to shame for years to come.

In any case while We’re not sure what will be announced at this rumored event, but we’re guessing the actual console itself, its pricing, bundles, SKUs and whatnot. We’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but with May being pretty close to E3, we wouldn’t be surprised if this were true.

Jimmy Fallon and Anthony Anderson test drive PlayStation’s newest technology playing the upcoming game Killzone: Shadow Fall. Killzone is a first-person shooter (FPS) full of explosions, blood, and flying bullets.

It´s totally funny. Fallon plays through the Shadow Fall demo as does comedian Anthony Anderson. Chaos soon erupted, however, when both Fallon and Anderson didn’t quite have the chops necessary to blaze through all the bad guys, and the hands-on session quickly grew into a fun screaming match between the two comedians. Fallon shoots up a wall, while Anderson unleashes on a bunch of air conditioners…

We still haven’t seen the PlayStation 4. Sony’s CEO even said that the console is still technically under development, which is why they haven’t shown the public the actual console just yet.

While the three-minute demo was essentially the same sequence showcased in the reveal trailer, a couple of interesting morsels did emerge. While talking about the greater range of possibilities with the PS4′s boosted hardware, Hermann Holst (Guerrilla Games) noted the demo’s climbing segment as something Guerrilla wasn’t “able to do with Killzone before.” Secondly, we got a clearer look at Shadow Fall’s slowdown mechanic in action, which Hulst called “Focus Mode.”

Sony fired the first shot in the next round of the console wars last night, previewing a powerful new version of its Playstation system with greater online and social media connectivity that is meant to drive sales back up as it competes with Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s market-leading Wii.

Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO Andrew House took to the stage at the Hammerstein Ballroom at Manhattan Center Studios in New York to reveal the name of Sony’s next-gen console – PlayStation 4, which will be available “holiday 2013″.

But sadly, and almost unbelievably, we still don’t know what the PlayStation 4 looks like. Sony has, however, revealed some fundamental details about the PS4:

PS4: Hardware specs

The documentation reveals the tech specs of the PS4 dev kits as follows:
•	System Memory: 8GB
•	Video Memory: 2.2 GB
•	CPU: 4x Dual-Core AMD64 “Bulldozer” (so, 8x cores)
•	GPU: AMD R10xx
•	Ports: 4x USB 3.0, 2x Ethernet
•	Drive: Blu-Ray
•	HDD: 160GB
•	Audio Output: HDMI & Optical, 2.0, 5.1 & 7.1 channels

Alongside the machine’s specifications, the documentation shows that there is a new controller for the console called the Orbis Development Tool, which maintains many features like vibrations, enhanced motion sensors and a Vita-like touchpad on the front and a key difference tot he olfd controller: a touchpad. This touch-surrface interface recognizes two point multi-touch and clicked for an additional input interface.

Sony’s next-gen console will also support “multi-simultaneous logins”, which will allow multiple users to sign into accounts on a single console at the same time.

Sony has revealed that the PS4 will launch with the ability to stream games directly to your PS Vita. In exactly the same way as the Wii U allows you to switch off your TV and continue playing on the tablet controller, the PS4 will wirelessly send your games to the Vita.

There will be similar synergy between “all Sony devices” which means Xperia handsets and tablets, Bravia TVs and BD players. We’re also looking at Blu-ray disk support plus DVD, plus HDMI output support as well as Analog-AV out and an optical digital output.

PlayStation 4 Eye

What’s really grabbing though is the development of the PlayStation 4 Eye, a newly developed camera system that utilizes two high-sensitivity camera equipped with wide-angle lenses and 85-degree diagonal angle views.

Sony said the cameras (amounting to 1280 x 800 pixels) can cut out the image of a player from the background or differentiate between players in the background and foreground, enhancing game play handily. There’s also mention of logging in using facial recognition and using voice and body movements to play games “more intuitively.”

Backwards compatibility

When the PS3 was first released it allowed you to ditch that PS2, but keep playing classics like Gran Turismo 3 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on your new console. However as the PS3 slimmed down, it lost that feature. Rumours seem to indicate the PS4 won’t even get the initial chance to sample any of its predecessor’s software.

PS4 Instant On

The PS4 will be one nippy device if Sony is to be believed. It will have an instant on/off feature allowing your to shut down during a game and then boot up from scratch in seconds and resume where you left off. The days of waiting 60 seconds as your console loads up are about to end.

Sony also said PS4 radically reduces the lag time between players and their content. The system utilises a “suspend mode” which keeps the console in a low power state while preserving game sessions.

PS4 price

No pricing details were revealed at the event, so all we’ve got to go on are various rumours from before the launch – but it might be that Sony has a price point of around $400 in mind for the US release.

This is further backed up by a recent report in The Times which states that Sony is aiming for a price of under £300 in the U.K. Many people think it’ll be more than that though – we’ll just have to wait and see.

Sony headquarters dangled the possibility of the imminent announcement of its next-generation PlayStation 4 console on Friday, sending out invitations to journalists for a 20 February press conference on “the future of PlayStation“.

Anonymous sources suggest that Sony is planning to incorporate more social gaming aspects into the new machine, is more focused this time on the changes in how users interact with the machine and will be more powerful than the next console from Microsoft. The source also indicated that Sony was planning to turn the next PlayStation into a “nerve center” for home entertainment.

Specific elements of Sony’s new controller already leaked last week, like a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. A Share button that will launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online.”The system will reportedly “continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action, which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

It’s important to note that none of the information above has been confirmed by Sony, which remains adamant about not commenting on rumors of potential products in development. There’s no certainty that Wednesday’s event will be related to the next-generation console.

We will update this story when we have more information.

The code name reportedly being given to the PlayStation 4 is “Orbis” and should be released in 2013, according to a new rumor. The word ‘Orbis’ itself, from Latin, means circle, or ring, or even orbit. Sounds cool! Inside sources have leaked information to the press claiming that the console contains better graphics and a resolution better than most high-definition TV sets, with users able to play 3D games in full HD. The CPU in the next-generation PS4 is an AMD Llano A8-3850. The chip will supposedly be paired with an AMD Radeon 7670 GPU with 1GB of integrated VRAM.

While the PlayStation 3 (PS3) was technically capable of full HD 3D game play, Sony’s guidelines prevented games from displaying in full 1080p (pixels). Among the purported specs on the PS4: a resolution of 4096×2160, which is far in excess of the needs of most current HDTV sets. It will also be capable of playing 3D games in 1080p. Some game studios may have already received development kits for the Orbis.

The bad news is that the PS4 will not be able to play PS3 games, so users might want to consider selling their games, or trading them in. And it gets worse: Games for the new console will reportedly be available as a PlayStation Network download or as a disc. This would, of course, drastically affect the used game market: You can’t trade-in a downloaded game, nor would anyone want to buy a second-hand game that’s already been locke” to another account. There are also rumors circulating that the next generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles will block people from being able to play used games.

Another new report names 2012 as the release year for Sony’s next home console, the PlayStation 4.
Sony will have Taiwan-based partners begin production of PlayStation 4 (PS4) featuring body movement-based control like Kinect at the end of 2011 for launch in 2012, according to Taiwan-based component makers.

Foxconn and Pegatron Technology, assemblers of PS3, will undertake assembly of PS4 as well, the sources pointed out. The planned shipment volume of PS4 in 2012 is at least 20 million units, the sources indicated.
The 20-million-shipped number implies that Sony would be launching the system in more markets than just Japan in 2012. That doesn’t really help to peg a release date, as Sony could very well decide to launch in multiple markets in the same window, as it did with the PS3.
Sony has yet to comment on the report as of yet, though don’t count on hearing much more than the usual “no comment” spiel.

According to a post by Industry Gamers they have heard from “industry sources at a top developer” that the PlayStation 4 may be revealed next year. More specifically, Sony hopes to show it off sometime within the next 18 months. It’s interesting how this report surfaces just a week after we heard rumors telling us that Microsoft is preparing to reveal the XBOX 720 next year. The lack of information surrounding the plans of Sony and Microsoft make their potential new products infinitely more enticing.

Whether these rumors are true or not we aren’t sure that Sony is going to announce a new console in 2012, but we wouldn’t be surprised. It all hinges on what you interpret “10 year life cycle” to mean. The one thing that everyone will agree on is that it won’t be 2016 before Sony confirms their intentions for the next generation of gaming consoles.

What specs will the Playstation 4 have? Still too early to say, but it ought to be pretty tasty. In fact one analyst reckons Sony’s commitment to high-end hardware – along with the fragility of the US economy – may be what’s holding it back from launching the PS4 in the near future.
There is very little information regarding the PS4 now, but what we heard is:
•	3D gaming
•	Social games
•	Motion gaming
•	More online options
•	Backwards compatible

There have been some rumors that Sony could move to an IBM PowerPC processor for the PS4, but that currently seems unlikely – in December, Sony bought the factory that makes the Cell processors from Toshiba, which suggests it’s commited to this platform. And sticking to Cell would simplify matters for software developers.

“I don’t think either Sony or Microsoft are interested in a new console until they can advance the technology, and they certainly don’t want to launch at a $600 price point. It may take some time to get 2TB hard drives, uber-fast CPUs and state-of-the art graphics, and sell at $400.”

Check back for more updates about the PlayStation 4 launch soon.

We know Sony is already hard at work evaluating and making prototypes for the PS4. Developing next-generation hardware takes years of planning and work. The big question is how does they prepare for it?

Betting is that consoles will have to keep up with the graphic market or else the “built out of my garage” PC’s will dominate the market.
That is unless Sony, Microsoft, & Nintendo can make deals with Graphic Card manufactures to not to sell a particular “Card Line” that will give the same eye candy experience as the consoles could have at least a 5 year time span.

The downside on technology moving so fast these days is that we might be seeing consoles developed every 4-7 years. Nobody is going to want to pay for a console when it’s outdated in less then a year but this is the way we’re going with technology these days.

Sony bet big bucks that its Cell processor and Blu-ray would become significant components to its home entertainment strategy and it’s paying off, but what’s to come? A PS4 with a glasses-free 3D projector?
