It’s possible that how the PlayStation 3 fares in the current console war may also determine the release date of the PS4, for a couple of reasons. If the system continues to flounder in 3rd place, failing to generate the revenue which was initially expected of it, Sony may be far more eager to cut their losses and rush the PS4 to market sooner. Only as the system’s life spans come to an end will we likely see the PlayStation 3 come out with games that clearly trump what the 360 can do graphically.

A report has gone up on a Japanese website which seems to state that Sony have shelved their plans for their next generation of home consoles. If (!) this translation can be trusted, it seems that Sony might be tuning the PlayStation 3 and putting their faith in their handhelds rather than producing a PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, but Kaz Hirai says Sony is still fully focused on its current home console instead of looking ahead to the next generation. The SCEI chairman told Japanese website PC Impress Watch: “[The PS3] has a ten-year lifecycle.”

As the PlayStation 4 won’t be announced for some time, speculation is growing about two other gaming platforms from Sony.
a) Sony Ericsson’s “PlayStation Phone,” likely to be called the Xperia Play, as several leaked images and videos have shown.
b) and the long-awaited PlayStation Portable 2 (PSP2) could be unveiled at a special Sony event in Tokyo later this month, reports claim.
