PS4 details

The PlayStation 4 is set to arrive in less than two weeks on November 15th and now Sony has published a detailed FAQ at the PlayStation Blog covering a wide range of topics including the console itself, supported accessories, and new details on the PlayStation Network and digital games availability. There’s truly a wealth of information to be found here, so if you’re at all curious what Sony’s latest console is (and isn’t) capable of, the entire FAQ is worth a read.

PlayStation 4 Bad news

DualShock 3 controllers will not work with the PS4, nor will PS3 Blu-ray remotes. Your Move controllers will still function with the PS4, but only in games that are built for the new system. PS3 Bluetooth headsets will also not work with the PS4.

Sony says you’ll be unable to use the PS4 as a client for your media server. The next-gen console is shipping without DLNA support, a significant step backwards for a device that’s likely to be a living room centerpiece for many. Even more unfortunate, the PS4 can’t play MP3 files, suggesting that Sony wants users to turn to its own store and third-party apps for all media needs. And your CD collection? Useless. Sony has decided that now’s the time to end support for audio CD playback.

The PS4 will include a 500GB 5,400RPM hard drive that’s user replaceable — so long as the new drive is larger than 160GB. Sony says the console’s cooling system has been tuned for living room usage and is generally much quieter than the PS3, so hopefully you’ll rarely hear a whirring fan during those lengthy gaming sessions or when watching a movie. But the second time in the last few weeks, rumors have surfaced that the PlayStation 4 is prone to overheating.

The rumors are particularly troubling because of the potential problem that this represents for Sony. Anyone who purchased an Xbox 360 at launch can likely attest to the frustration that overheating issues can bring up. Microsoft’s poorly ventilated first-run of the console was prone to overheating issues, and so many defective units spurred a massive recall. Well we won’t need to wait much longer to get confirmation about the rumors.

Another newly revealed limitation is: You can record, stream, or share any game you want, but certain sections may be off limits. “Developers can select the area of restriction, and what will be restricted depending on game titles,” reads the PlayStation Blog. “In these cases, recording will be temporarily suspended during the scene.”

On a similar note, you won’t be able to add voice overs to a shared video clip. You can, however, talk in real time as you’re streaming. At launch, PS4 users also won’t be able to upload game videos to YouTube. Also, the Share button will upload gameplay videos to a Facebook account, or it will let you stream gameplay to Ustream or Twitch.

PlayStation 4 Good news

Sony has confirmed that a software update and one-time internet activation will be required before you can watch any Blu-rays or DVDs. That update, PS4 firmware 1.50, will be available at launch — and you’ll be allowed to play a game while it downloads in the background. And while PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer, you’ll be free to use apps (movies, music) without subscribing to Sony’s service.
Cross-platform play between PS3 and PS4 is ‘technically possible’.

Furthermore Sony interestingly notes that cross-platform play between the PS3 and its successor is technically possible. The console’s user interface is referred to as the PlayStation Dynamic Menu.

List of launch day titles

Digital Foundry reports that the PS4 also offers a higher resolution than the Xbox One for “Battlefield 4.”
Popular games such as Assassin’s Creed IV, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Fifa 14, Just Dance 2014, Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Madden NFL 25, NBA 2k14, NBA Live 14, and Need for Speed: Rivals will be available for both consoles.

The Playstation 4 will launch on Nov. 15 in the U.S. and Canada. The console will be released in Europe, Australia and New Zealand on Nov. 29, 2013.
