Is your mouth watering in anticipation of the next console war yet? Well, it should be! If ex-President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, David Reeves is right, a Playstation 4 and ‘Xbox 720′ could be arriving in two years. Reeves, who is now COO of Capcom Europe, no longer has any insider knowledge on Sony’s plans for new hardware launches – but predicted in a recent interview with GI.biz that we could see two new home consoles from the market giants in two or three years time.
When Reeves was asked of his opinion on Microsoft Kinect and Playstation Move, he said:
Anything [Microsoft and Sony] can add to revive and pique interest in the games until we have another clash of the titans in two years time
He continued in regards to a potential Playstation 4 and Xbox 720,
“Two to three years, I reckon so. I don’t have any inside information. All the first-parties have got to be working on something. The tricky thing is when do you put a stake in the ground on technology? That’s the problem. You can be waiting a few extra months to implement something, but you’ve got to set a date to go with a certain chip at a certain point otherwise you’re going to miss the key milestones,”
Reeves stopped short of conceding that the market giants decisions on both Kinect and Move and future home consoles would impact Capcom’s business.
While Reeves may no longer have any connection to Sony, his outspoken predictions in regards to future gaming consoles do carry some weight. While he occupied a key role at Sony Entertainment Europe, he would have had a major say in future plans for the Sony gaming platform – and this recent interview is the closest the public have gotten to anything remotely official from Sony in regards to a Playstation 4 Console.
One thing seems certain though, behind the scenes both Sony and Microsoft are preparing for another console battle in the coming years – and who could forget Nintendo in all of this? I’m pretty sure they will want to have a say in who leads the way – Wii 2, anyone?
